Beyond Zero Emissions welcomes the passing of the Future Made in Australia legislation

November 28, 2024

Beyond Zero Emissions welcomes the formal approval of the Future Made in Australia package of legislation which will enable Australia to prosper in the global shift to net zero.

Today marks a historic day for Australia - the biggest climate bills in recent times were passed in Parliament, paving the way for a Future Made in Australia. Beyond Zero Emissions welcomes the formal approval of the Future Made in Australia package of legislation which will enable Australia to prosper in the global shift to net zero.

Our research shows that activities under this package can deliver more than $215 billion into regional Australia over the next ten years. More than 53,000 good quality jobs can be delivered in the communities most impacted by the shift to a clean economy.

Many of our research-backed recommendations have been included in the Act, which sets the stage for Australian manufacturing to thrive, secure jobs well into the future, all while reducing our domestic emissions at the scale and speed needed this decade.

It is fantastic to see what we have been advocating for reflected in the Future Made in Australia legislation:

  1. No funding of any fossil fuel-related activities
  2. Establishment of the National Interest Framework to guide public investment and attract private capital to accelerate the energy transition and grow cleantech industries of the future.
  3. The intent to deliver a net zero economy embedded throughout the National Interest Framework, sector assessments, and community benefit principles.

We look forward to the final Future Made in Australia Bill on Production Tax Credits and Other Measures being passed into law early next year. These additional policies are crucial to build investor, industry, and community confidence that flow-on benefits will materialise.

Our work is far from done. Now it’s time to turn good policy into action and focus on implementing good solutions well, so that Australians can reap the benefits of the energy and economic transition.
