Zero carbon councils
Zero Carbon Communities works closely with several Council based climate programs. We encourage Councils to set ambitious zero emissions targets and to work in collaboration with their communities.
The Zero Carbon Communities program works in partnership with the Global Covenant of Mayors, an international program that supports Councils in tracking progress to zero carbon and provides the most comprehensive platform for emissions reduction. Participating Councils benefit from the knowledge of the international community and the global recognition program.
Several Australian Councils are also part of the Cities Power Partnership. Through this program Council’s commit to reducing their own emissions through selected actions. The knowledge hub and events are invaluable for officers working on climate action.
Beyond Zero Emissions seeks to collaborate with these programs where possible on the development of supporting research and tools. Councils and communities working together are a powerful force for change.
Resources to get you started
Beyond Zero Emissions has published two free reports that demonstrate what local councils are doing (and the barriers and opportunities they face), and how it’s affordable and achievable now for Australia to become a zero carbon community.
Our Snapshot tool provides carbon emissions for Australian municipalities. They are designed to help community groups and government take action on climate.
Each Snapshot is free to download (as a PDF) and are currently available for over 100 municipalities.
ZCC is an initiative of Beyond Zero Emissions – an innovative, volunteer-powered climate solutions think tank based in Melbourne.
