Communities can now get a free Snapshot of their carbon emissions, thanks to a new website launched today by Beyond Zero Emissions and Ironbark Sustainability.

Snapshot is the first national tool providing community-wide greenhouse gas profiles for every council across Australia. Snapshot calculates major sources of carbon emissions, including stationary energy, transport, waste, agriculture and land-use change.

Beyond Zero Emissions CEO, Vanessa Petrie said: “Australian communities have a strong and proud history of leading climate action many are working towards zero emissions.

“With an understanding of the largest emissions sectors in your local area, Snapshot means you can now target your activities and high impact areas.”

Ironbark Sustainability Managing Director Paul Brown agrees: “We’re all about real action on climate and this is a critical step to ensuring we all know where to stand.”

“Through offering a snapshot of local emissions, communities and councils are now all equipped with the information they need to drive change.”

“In many ways this is likely to be just the beginning. In line with the International protocol, transparency is paramount here and the Snapshot methodology is available for all to interrogate.”

All Australian council Snapshots will be online in the coming months and community groups and councils are being encouraged to contact Snapshot if they want theirs fast-tracked.

Snapshot has been supported generously by the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation, Sustainability Victoria and Renew. This team helped make a small idea into a living, breathing tool.
