Australia’s rising emissions an avoidable failure.

Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions have risen yet again, but the reality is that it could be at zero emissions in a decade if it adopts affordable and available solutions, according to Beyond Zero Emissions CEO Vanessa Petrie.

Data from the Quarterly Update of Australia’s National Greenhouse Gas Inventory: September 2018 shows that emissions for the year to September 2018 are up 0.9 per cent on the previous year.

“The government can keep claiming it is on track to meet climate targets, but the data shows the truth: its attempts at addressing climate change through creative accounting and ineffective policies are failing.”

“Fortunately, Australia has everything it needs to get to zero emissions within the next decade: The technical and research expertise, skilled workers, readily available solutions, and some of the best wind and solar energy resources on earth.”

“We can create a safe, reliable electricity system that is 100% renewable, which would allow us to ditch fossil fuels by electrifying other sector like transport, manufacturing and buildings.”

“This would help Australia get to zero emissions, and in the process, unlock lower energy bills, new revenue streams, global export opportunities, and a stronger economy.”

“As the multibillion dollar costs racked up by climate-fuelled extreme weather in many parts of the country show, the true wrecking ball to Australia’s economy is climate inaction and a failure to move beyond polluting fossil fuels.”

“It will take some work to get from our carbon-intensive society to a zero-emissions one, but every step of the way is paved with opportunities and benefits.”

“Australian politicians need to decide whether they want to steer the country towards more financial and climate risk, or seize smart solutions that will steer the country to a safe and prosperous future.”
