Re-energising Rural and Regional Economies
This talk explores some of the options and opportunities
to re-energise rural and regional economies
by riding on the wave of innovation across our whole economy.
Rural and regional economies have been losers in recent decades of technological change and economic development focused on growing cities. Rural businesses have been ‘price takers’ dependent on powerful big businesses. But things are changing. There is potential for rural businesses to capture a bigger share of the financial pie. Modular, flexible, and sometimes relocatable electric food processing technologies are beginning to out-compete large gas-dependent plants that are located where cheap gas used to be available. Transporting higher value product will help to cut transport carbon emissions – a difficult target area. Gaps between agriculture, tourism, food processing and retailing are blurring. Interest in renewable energy from rural areas is growing.
Speaker: Alan Pears

He has worked with community-based groups such as BZE, Renew and Environment Victoria, advised industry associations and many others, and taught at universities. Recent activities include working with the Asia-Pacific Economic Community on urban issues, projects with the Australian Alliance for Energy Productivity, and developing programs on agriculture and food processing with the NSW and Victorian governments. He has also helped BZE on its Grampians Zero Emission project, and with community and council at Queenscliff. Alan is particularly interested in the evolution of distributed, modular, flexible zero-emission solutions for processing, manufacture and integrated energy systems in regional areas.
