John Wood, CEO of Ecoult, joins Beyond Zero to talk about the Ecoult effort to commercialize the UltraBattery® storage solutions. UltraBattery® is a hybrid, long-life lead-acid energy storage device. It combines the fast charging rates and longevity of an ultracapacitor technology with the energy storage potential of a lead-acid battery technology in a hybrid device with a single common electrolyte. Applications include stationary energy storage, renewable energy support and electric vehicles.
UltraBattery® has a new set of performance enhancing features:
– operates in a Partial State of Charge (PSoC), and mitigates the deteriorating effects common to other lead-acid batteries
– accepts charge faster, lasts longer and is more efficient and cost-effective than conventional lead-acid batteries when used for variable power applications.
John talks about the fast charge/ discharge rate of the technology, and applications such as frequency management, variability management, matching supply and demand in second and minutes
John’s vision for Ecoult is to be a significant contributor to the innovation and transformation process that will make energy storage simple and straightforward so that it becomes just one more tool in a utility network architect’s and engineer’s kit.
John joined the energy storage community in 2008 having previously launched technologies globally in Security, Identity, Payment Technology, and Telecommunications. As a technology CEO for more than 20 years, John has had the good fortune to have worked with excellent individuals and led excellent teams that have created businesses and numerous successful products and solutions from the ground up that are used and trusted by many of the world’s largest enterprises and governments, either directly or under license by many of the largest global technology enterprises.
