The Hepburn Community owns and operates Australia’s first community-owned wind farm. It’s at Leonards Hill about 100km north-west of Melbourne, just south of Daylesford, Victoria.
The Hepburn Wind turbines first produced electricity in June 2011.
The 4.1 MW wind farm hosts two turbines called Gale and Gusto, which produce enough clean energy for over 2000 homes.
Despite many challenges, overwhelming support from the community has made it happen.
This has inspired similar projects in other areas which are exploring the community enterprise model for renewable energy projects.
They celebrate their 2011 launch with a festival.
There is an 2011 flier on site wisegroup.org.au.
